Papua with Dua Benua

Dense rainforests and misty valleys, ribbons of rivers intersected with suspension bridges. Heavy drops of sweat running down the forehead while wandering the jungle to reach out to the remotest tribes we have seen previously only in television programs. Papua – breathtaking, barely changed by the hand of man. It still remains the least discovered region of the world.

Day 1:
Welcome to Papua - Jayapura

Day 2:
Jayapura – Sentani Lake – Asei Island (B)

Asei is the centre for traditional craftsmanship – painted tree bark cloths, know as ‘maro’ or ‘tapa’. Later we will visit Cenderawasih Museum to see the impressive collection of tribal Asmat art. On the way back we will stop at the traditional Hamadi market where we can find a plenitude of wooden sculptures, tribal masks and other ethnic and antique goods.
Day 3:
Jayapura – Wamena (B)
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Wamena – gateway to the Baliem Valley. The flight above infinite dense rainforest, mist clad valleys riddled with streamers of mighty rivers explains why this region has remained isolated for so many centuries. Upon arrival, we will begin our cultural tour by visiting the Dani Tribe where you can see the colorful warrior dances and join the traditional Dani pig feast. Later we will continue to Jiwika Village where the well-preserved mummy of the ancestor is kept. We will spend the night in a local homestay.
Day 4:
Wamena – Kilise Village (B, L, D)
After registering your ID to the local police office we will start hiking. Today we will be trekking for about 3 hours. First, we will cross the suspension bridge on Yetni River and continue to Kurima. Next, we will visit Kilise Village where we can observe the traditional village life, learn about tribal customs and beliefs. We will pass several villages beyond civilization and encounter tribal people still wearing ‘koteka’ (penis gourd) or skirts made from woven orchid fibers.
Day 5:
Kilise – Tangma (B, L, D)
Today we will be trekking around the villages in Tangma. On the way, we will visit thatched tribal houses called honai and admire the pristine landscape of the valleys. Back to Kilise for overnight.
Day 6:
Kilise – Syokosimo (B, L, D)
Today lighter trekking down the valley to Syokosimo. On the way, we will stop at the top of a nearby hill to enjoy the unique and fabulous scenery of the valley. Walking along the Baliem River we will have to cross over suspension bridges. Lunch at Syokosimo, followed by a swim in the Mugi River.
Day 7:
Syokosimo – Ugem – Wamena (B, L, D)
